About the UJCL

The Union of Jewish Congregations of Latin America and the Caribbean (UJCL) -- was born in February 1998 in Costa Rica. The Union arose out of a very successful First Conference, attended by representatives of Progressive Jewish communities in the region.

The UJCL strives to preserve the continuity of Judaism in the region and to give a voice to all the small liberal communities in Latin America and the Caribbean. These would otherwise remain ignored and isolated, left to face by themselves the multiple challenges to survival inherent in micro-communities.

The Union wholeheartedly supports the basic tenets of Judaism, and concentrates its efforts on the education of their youth, so that their children receive the incredible richness of the Jewish heritage.

The UJCL reaches out to all the Jewish communities in the Caribbean and Latin America which have yet to become members, and hopes that they will soon become active participants. Thus, they will enrich further the tapestry of progressive congregations which weave their unique design of common aspirations and purpose into the Union.
