Introduction

Temple Beth Shalom (TBS), the Reform Jewish Congregation of Puerto Rico was founded in 1967 by a group of families seeking the warmth and intimacy of a small congregation. We have grown to over 75 households plus about 40 off-island associate members who live less than six months on our enchanted island.

TBS also hosts many tourists and scholars-in-residence, especially during the winter months. We offer a generous range of programs, far in excess of most small synagogues, that appeal to the wide range of our members' demographics and backgrounds. Life-cycle events such as weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, confirmations, conversions, and baby naming ceremonies form an integral component of our community.

Shabbat Services

Languages used for our services are English, Hebrew and some Spanish. Erev Shabbat
(Friday) service starts at 8:30pm and an Oneg follows the Service. Saturday morning Shabbat
Service starts at 10:00am.

Annual Events

We pride ourselves on the variety of our community events. These include a Succoth
gathering, Purim and Channukah parties, community Passover Seder and children's model
seder, pre-Shabbat dinners, and special Onegs to honor member sub-groups. Our High
Holiday services include a bagel and lox break-the-fast to renew our spiritual and
communal bonds.

Religious School

Our religious Sunday school hosts around 15 students, ages 5 to 13. Principal Shula Klapper guides two other educators teaching Hebrew, holidays, crafts and history amongst other subjects.
Our kids attend Camp Crane Lake and other camps to strengthen their Jewish identity.

Newsletter

A monthly newsletter is mailed to all members. associates and friends during the last week of each month. Glenn Patron compiles all submissions, and requests that materials be sent no later than the 20th of each month.

Outreach

We are a diverse community-serving people from Orthodox to Reform backgrounds.
Interfaith couples compose more than one third of our membership. Along with native islanders who have converted, these groups represent an ever-increasing percentage of our community.
Additionally, many members have a child or parent married to a non-Jew. Consequently,
Outreach has assumed a leading role in our community, leading to an aggressive and structured program that appeals to both members and prospective members.

News from TBS

  • In the month of July TBS extended a hearty welcome to Rabbi Mordecai Rotem, its new Rabbi. A leader in the Reform movement in his native Israel, Rabbi Rotem will lead religious services and will enrich our Jewish community.
Above all, he will energize our members with his wealth of knowledge and experience.
  • We will set up and equip an Educational Center with Internet access and a library rich in Jewish Literature for children. The students will use the center for remedial and enrichment purposes.
